The name comes from the name of the town in France where a large amount of the weaving was done for the French royalty. As opposed to needlepoint which is stitched on a canvass, Aubusson is woven on a loom. The very fine wool is wrapped around the weft threads to match the pattern being followed and each time the color needs to be changed, a knot is tied. The patterns on Aubusson rugs tend to be a bit more formal than those that are done in needlepoint. Peel uses that word to describe the weave used to construct the rug; however, some use the word to describe the very French floral oval patterns that were typical of period Aubusson pieces.
